Strategy Writeup
Start by blocking the furniture the Ghoul throws at you during the opening moments of the fight. He's particularly weak against Fire, Blizzard, and Lighting spells, so emphasize having your party cast those after dodging the multitude of furniture. The Ghoul also has some status-affecting attacks that will put you in Silence, where you can't cast magic, and a stun attack to keep you stuck in place and vulnerable for 10 seconds. If any of your party members are afflicted by Silence, throw out some Echo Mist to clear them up.
Later during the fight, the Ghoul will pick up a party member and hold them up in the air. However, this Ghoul is a lie! When this happens, remove your lock-on and look to the other side of the room to attack the real Ghoul. Wail on him enough, and he'll be forced to free your party member. The Ghoul isn't too tough, so maintain spell pressure to put him back in the grave where he belongs.
Attacks & Counters
Attack | Counter |
Phase 1 | |
Ghoul will alternate between forms and, while it can be damaged in either, these forms will determine how quickly it’s Pressure and Stagger gauges will fill. | Be sure to exploit these weaknesses to the fullest. |
Ghoul deals heavy damage, and can stun and Silence party members | Keep an eye on your party’s HP and status. If you are having a difficult time, let Aerith’s ATB charges pile up and save them for healing, restoring, and buffing the party. If you have things under control, take advantage of Aerith’s powerful new Ray of Judgment ability to deal heavy damage to Ghoul, especially while it’s Staggered. Piercing Scream will stun Ghoul’s target, immediately halting any moves in progress, so avoid using any expensive MP / ATB moves, guarding instead when you see the attack winding up. After you’ve dealt enough damage to bring Ghoul to 50% HP, it will enter Phase 2. |
Phase 2 | |
Ghoul will gain several new attacks. Balefire will spread purple flames around the room, which will erupt into pillars of fire after a few seconds. | If you touch them, they will explode and deal significant damage, so avoid them as you navigate the room and engage the boss. |
From time to time, Ghoul will also lift every item in the room as it vanishes and teleports to a new location. The furniture, computers, and shelves will swirl around the room before slamming down on the ground, creating obstacles on your path back to the boss. | Take advantage of this opportunity to command your other party members to Pressure or even Stagger Ghoul, or heal the grabbed player. |
Ghoul can also use the Etheric Drain attack, which will grab one of your party, lifting them in the air and dealing light HP and MP damage. | When this happens, remove your lock-on and look to the other side of the room to attack the real Ghoul. Wail on him enough, and he'll be forced to free your party member. Keep your party healed, their status clear, and press your advantage as Ghoul moves from state to state, and you’ll soon defeat the sinister presence and claim the Subversion Materia as a reward. |
