Strategy Writeup
Begin the fight by focusing Fire attacks (like Firaga) on one of Abzu’s horns. Hitting it hard will instantly inflict Pressured status, causing Abzu to dance around for several seconds, leaving it open to additional attacks, before it jumps into the sewer channel to douse the flames.
Abzu may crouch on the wall during the fight, in order to prepare the Pounce attack. Pounce is unblockable, and will inflict Bound on whomever it hits as Abzu deals repeating heavy blows on them. Run diagonally away from Abzu and dodge to avoid getting hit.
The timing on avoiding the attack can be a bit tricky, so if you have difficulty avoiding it, keep ATB charges in reserve to have your other party members cast Cura/Curaga, or use Hi-Potions/Mega-Potions on the Bound character.
As soon as your Summon charges, bring Ifrit into the battle and target Abzu’s horns with Crimson Dive or Radiant Plume.
As long as Ifrit is out, use your healer’s ATB charges to keep the party topped off, and use melee attacks on your other two characters, burning their ATB charges on Ifrit’s powerful Fire attacks (Firaga is more powerful, but the MP cost is steep, so focus on Ifrit for now as his commands cost nothing but ATB).
From time to time, Abzu will charge a Backwash ability. Backwash Spout will cause small whirlwinds of Poison water to erupt around the battle arena, so run to avoid them and have your healer use Poisona / Antidotes on whomever doesn’t have a Star Pendant equipped.
Abzu can also cast Provoke during the fight, which will inflict the Fury status ailment. Fury increases the damage your character takes, but it also increases the rate at which their Limit Break gauge will fill.
Once Abzu gets down to 50% health, it will cast Enrage and the fight will enter Phase 2.
At this time, it will become more dangerous, and it will use powered up versions of a few of its attacks (Triple Charge instead of Charge, etc.) but all of the elements of the fight are the same. Stay close to Abzu with Cloud, counter melee attacks with Punisher Mode, exploit the Fire weakness, keep the party healed, and keep attacking.
During Phase 2, Abzu may opt to jump onto the wall and use Backwater Blast, which will cause the sewers to overflow and flood the part of the arena closest to Abzu. Run to the other side of the arena (to the left) to avoid taking damage, although the characters you aren’t controlling may take damage.
Although two of your characters will be immune to Poison status, this attack still deals heavy damage, so be sure to take a break from attacking and use your ATB charges to heal before continuing.
Keep Poison off your characters, use Magnify Cura/Curaga, and abuse your Ifrit Summon and Limit Breaks to bring this fight to a conclusive end.
