Strategy Writeup

For this fight, stick it on Barret linked with Thunder as keeping your distance is the best tactic thanks to Airbuster’s propensity to stun those who are in close range. His bullets will do more damage and increase the Stagger further.

Since your party is split initially, this works to your advantage. Always switch to the characters who are behind Airbuster as it’ll be concentrating its attacks on the ones in front of him. When it’s occupied with one character, hit it with your strongest Lightning Magic (the more characters with this, the better) until it’s stunned and then wail on it with your strongest ATB abilities like Triple Slash.

The fight gets trickier in the second part; Airbuster will retreat down the gangway and charge up its Tankbuster laser. So just retreat down the sides of the T-shape and use the time to heal or hit him with more Magic. This is where Barret comes into his own, as he can keep targeting Airbuster with his enhanced Elemental attacks and whittling down its health. It will then split off its arms which will fire arcs of electricity at you, so target those individually straight away to stop these attacks and significantly boost the Stagger bar.

Airbuster will continue to use Tankbuster periodically, so just keep an eye out and get out of the way. As long as you dodge this attack or quickly get a Phoenix Down and heal on a dead ally, you can continue using the tried and tested methods from earlier in the fight. Once it’s very low on health, it’ll fire off the Big Bomber attack (if you got rid of as many shells as possible with the keycards, it should only be able to use this once) and likely cause significant damage, so make sure you use any ATB remaining to heal. Survive this and finish it off for good.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Phase 1
The Airbuster has several Lightning-based attacks. It will charge its base with electricity. Back up when you see the start-up to avoid taking damage.
It will also scatter shock grenades on the ground, which have a rather large area of effect. You need to be very aware of where you are standing and avoid standing near them or you’ll be stunned for several seconds (during which you’ll be opened to punishing boss attacks).
A particularly dangerous combination of attacks the Airbuster will use is the stunning Fingerbeams, followed by the Big Bomber attack, which can knock one of your characters out if they have taken even a moderate amount of damage during the fight. Use your Potions and healing spells to keep everyone topped off and use your Pressure abilities to inflict Stagger on the boss, then lay into it with your strongest abilities.
Phase 2
Once you’ve cleared Stagger once, the Airbuster will enter Phase 2.
It will begin by retreating down the walkway towards the control room and starting up a powerful Tankbuster beam attack.
Retreat to the far left or right side and avoid chasing it, at least for now.
Attack with Thundara if you have ATB charges on your team, or use the opportunity to heal up if anyone is near half health, or below.
Once the beam has fired, close the distance and continue to pressure the boss.
he Airbuster’s arms will also detach during the fight and perform several attacks.
They can fly around the arena and perform their own beam attacks.
Watch out to make sure they aren’t flanking you and attacking you from behind. To counter this, surround them and focus-fire with electrical attacks and Pressure/Stagger-focused attacks.
While both hands are still alive, they can also form an electric barrier in front of the boss, preventing access. During this time, lean into destroying at least one of the arms with your ATB charges, focusing on Thundara attacks or healing up your teammates.
During this time, you will also begin charging your summon, so bring in either Ifrit or Chocobo & Moogle to deal attacks and take out the arms.
Phase 3
After taking enough damage, the Airbuster will initiate its rockets and take to the skies Magic and Barret’s machine gun are the only reliable way to damage it.
During this time, it will throw shock grenades on the ground, then follow up with lightning orbs and homing missiles to deal heavy damage. Focus on controlling your movement for the time being to avoid being stunned, then use your ATB charges to cast magic once the shock grenades have cleared out.
After a short time, the Airbuster will fly close to the walkway. Use this opportunity to let loose with melee attacks to build your ATB charges, but watch out for close-range attacks.
The boss will wind up and deal heavy damage with a fist-slam ability , use a flamethrower attack, and continue the stunning fingerbeam and machine gun attacks from earlier phases. You can counter with Punisher Mode
Play defensively, keep your team and make every ATB charge count to bring the fight to a close
Then the Airbuster will use a flamethrower attack, and continue the stunning fingerbeam and machine gun attacks from earlier phases. You can dodge sideways to avoid or you can block.
Play defensively, keep your team and make every ATB charge count to bring the fight to a close.

A large mobile weapons platform currently being developed by the Advanced Weaponry Division. Although still in the prototype phase, it was rushed into action to aid in the public execution of Avalanche members.

Airbuster Notes & Trivia

  • Lightning attacks rapidly fill its stagger gauge
  • Tip: A big part of this boss fight is managing the heavy damage being dealt by the Airbuster, so you’ll need to keep an eye on your party member’s HP. A great way to make it easier is to use Barret’s Lifesaver ability in conjunction with HP Up Materia and the Steelskin ability, which reduces his damage taken. This way, he can absorb attacks for Tifa and Cloud, while taking less damage than they would have.
